team competition items
Teams train in up to 6 disciplines in preparation for Calisthenics competitions such as Aesthetic, March, Rods, Clubs, Fancy and Free. Each discipline has different features, rules and expectations.
Coaches are skilled in choreographing each item and selecting appropriate and effective music, costume, lighting and props choices. The complexity of each routine is developed in response to the skill and development level of the team.
figure march
In ‘March’ teams display marching techniques and patterns, focused on good deportment and teamwork. Rhythm and precision within the team is very important.
club swinging
‘Clubs’ requires determination and lots of practice. Teams learn and execute swings using equipment which is individually sized.
Rhythm, uniformity and coordination are important. Advanced routines include moving through various patterns and executing leg movements.
free exercises • free arm
‘Free’ is performed without apparatus and is a cross between traditional calisthenic type movements and gymnastic movements such as bendbacks and walkovers. Flexibility and control are important features.
Younger sections start with simple basic movements, correct in technique, detail and uniformity. As the item progresses through the age groups, it becomes more challenging depending on the competitors’ strength and abilities.
rods
Rods’ is based on similar movements to 'freearm' with the added challenge of manipulating apparatus sized to each competitor. Although the rod is the focal point, the manipulation of this apparatus while demonstrating flexible use of body and legs, highlights the concentration and co-ordination required by the performers.
aesthetic exercises
‘Aesthetic’ is a graceful form of dance where competitors wear flowing skirts and interpret music with a variety of facial and body expressions. Movements are soft and flowing while maintaining poise, strength and flexibility. Arm and feet positions are taken from classical ballet.
fancy
‘Fancy’ is a team item prepared for the State Championships in September. There are a variety of formats which sometimes involve singing. Elaborate costumes, various dancing techniques and lots of fun are often involved!
